Leafy doesn't quite do it justice in Ljubljana. The EU's Green Capital of 2016 takes its parks and tree populations seriously. You can stroll the Ljubljanica River between swaying plane trees, wander up to the Ljubljana Castle between groves of ancient oaks, or get lost in the winding lanes of the Tivoli Gardens amid topiary-cut hedges aplenty. But beneath the blanket of chlorophyll is a bustling town of open-air cafés and student bars that's undoubtedly one of the most welcoming, most liveable in Central-Eastern Europe.

It's possible to walk the whole place in a single day. Going by foot is a true pleasure, too, whisking you through Art Nouveau and 1800s façades risen by the city-planning maestro Jože Plečnik of Prague and Vienna fame. Highlights are the romantic riverside boulevard, the grand Square of the Republic, and the Tromostovje Triple Bridge, which could have been plucked from the waterways of Venice. To learn more, the Architecture Museum of Ljubljana is a doozy for building buffs, while the Museum of Modern Art belies the town's forward-thinking, creative side.

There's a youthful energy about Ljubljana these days. One step into graffiti-scrawled Metelkova City is enough to testify to that. Gritty grunge clubs meet street art displays in that subculture melting pot. Other residents, meanwhile, prefer to channel their joules into the Slovenian wilds, with trips out to idyllic Lake Bled or hiking excursions to the pine-speckled heights of the Julian Alps.
