Legendary Swiss hotelier Caspar Badrutt invited the first visitors to St Moritz in 1865. Fast-forward more than a century and a half, and things have gone well for this Alpine resort — very well. It's now considered to be up there with Verbier and Megève as the chicest ski centre in Europe. It holds the rare honour of having hosted two Winter Olympics. Oh, and it's simply stunning!
The magic of the Engadin Valley swirls around St Moritz. From the Piz Nair to the north to the cloud-slicing Piz Bernina to the south, this arena has serious peaks and glaciers. Bolts of pine woods and edelweiss-sprouting meadows roll down from the heights to meet the town, which hosts chocolate-box Swiss chalets punctuated by bursts of bougainvillaea above the shimmering Moritzersee lake.
Of course, the skiing really blasts this one into the stratosphere. Slopes here carve down from a top elevation of 3,057 metres above sea level. There are 350 kilometres of marked pistes, all served by one of the world's most hi-tech lift systems. Then come the luxury ski hotels. Flaunting bubbling hot tubs, saunas, and fine-dining restaurants with the tastiest fondues you'll ever have – they’re fantastic.
Meanwhile, charter jets to St Mortiz in summer are a ticket to a hiking mecca engulfed by hundreds of kilometres of routes. The warmer months are also the time to catch the eye-watering Engadin at its best. Roaring waterfalls, blooming Alpine fields and the cooling waters of the local lakes all come to the fore from around May onwards.
